2016-2017 Testing Dates

STANDARDIZED TESTING SCHEDULE
Within the Elementary Schools of the North Allegheny School District, three standardized tests are administered:

CogAT

In grades one, two, and four, the Test of Cognitive Abilities (CogAT) is administered as a companion piece to the Iowa Test of Basic Skills. The test is also given to students in grade seven. The CogAT is an aptitude test and measures a student's school ability. Information from this test assists with individual student planning.

ITBS

The Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) is an assessment that measures students' achievement in grades two through five in Mathematics, Reading, and Vocabulary. The test is also administered to students in grades six and seven. Information from these test results is used to assist in individual student planning and the development and implementation of instructional improvement plans, as well as curriculum development.

PSSA

The State's assessment system is known as the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA). Tests are required under the Chapter 4 Regulations of the Pennsylvania State Board of Education and the federal guidelines that are outlined in the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). The tests are based on the Pennsylvania Core Standards in Mathematics, English Language Arts, and Science. The focus of the assessment is to determine the degree to which the students and schools in the State of Pennsylvania are proficient in achieving the content contained in the Pennsylvania Academic Standards in the areas of Mathematics, English Language Arts, and Science. Additionally, the PSSA provides information to teachers and schools to guide the redesign of curriculum and instructional strategies to enable students to master the Pennsylvania Academic Standards. The assessment also provides a growth model to determine if students are making one full year's worth of growth in the tested content area.
