North Allegheny is an attractive, professional community twelve miles north of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The District serves the municipalities of Bradford Woods Borough, Franklin Park Borough, Marshall Township and the Town of McCandless, encompassing 48 square miles. North Allegheny is one of the largest suburban school districts in western Pennsylvania, with a K-12 enrollment of over 8,000 students.
Most of the District is suburban-residential with some light industry. Over 1,000 people are employed by the District, making it one of the largest employers in the immediate area. A solid and growing tax base helps maintain economic stability. New housing developments and transferees moving into the area contribute to a steady enrollment.

The senior high school opened in 1974. Designed with student needs in mind, the facility provides a modern learning environment for both classroom and extra-curricular activities. Access to a computerized state and local reference network is available to students.

CURRICULUM North Allegheny is a comprehensive high school offering over 200 courses designed to meet the needs, abilities, interests and goals of a diverse student population.
Different ability levels are accounted for through phasing of five subject areas. English, science, social studies, mathematics and world language are phased according to difficulty and complexity of skills and content. Phasing ranges from less difficult Phase I courses to Phase IV courses requiring more complex skills. High achievers challenge themselves through Honors and Advanced Placement courses in grades 9-12.

TESTING The goal of our standardized testing program is to measure a student’s abilities and progress and help the staff examine the effectiveness of the curriculum. Students consistently score above national and state norms. An overview of testing performed at North Allegheny includes: · The Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) is taken annually by all students in grades 2-8 and measures student achievement in the areas of reading, written language, and mathematics. Results are reported using national and local norms. The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) is taken annually by all students in grades 2, 4, and 7. Administration of the CogAT allows the District to determine expected levels of achievement for individual students and the District. · PLAN, PSAT/NMSQT, ACT, SAT reasoning test and SAT subject tests. These tests are taken by students in grades 10-12. Reporting ACT, SAT reasoning test, SAT subject test scores to the colleges is the responsibility of the student. · Other tests are used for identification and diagnostic purposes. SPECIAL FEATURES North Allegheny is proud of its numerous extra-curricular offerings. Among the outstanding and diversified student activities are: National Honor Society, Air Force JROTC Honor Unit, “Spirit of NA” Tiger Band, Lifetime Activities Program, Forensics, DECA, drama and musical productions, award-winning student publications (newspaper, yearbook and literary magazine), Student Council, and NATV cable programming. Mandarin Chinese is a course selection.
Athletes, representing North Allegheny’s 24 varsity sports, are frequent winners at regional, state and national level competitions. A wide variety of intramural activities supplement the varsity program. On the international scene, North Allegheny participates in a yearly exchange program with a sister school in Hanover, Germany as well as the American Field Service International Exchange Program (AFS).
